In this guide, we'll compare the MetaSlider and Slider Revolution plugins. We'll examine features, ease-of-use, performance, and pricing so you can choose the right slider for your site. Look, let's be honest: you're on the MetaSlider website. We're going to recommend MetaSlider. But our aim is to give you accurate details so you choose with confidence. That is a serious question. What does the word “lifetime” mean when talking about software? Are we talking about the lifetime of the product? The lifetime of the user? How about the lifetime of the developers or the business? And how do they handle support over all those years? We rarely hear a clear and up-front answer on this. Almost everyone selling "lifetime" access has small print that greatly limits what you actually get. Reason #2. Lifetime licenses are a terrible business model The “lifetime” business model is broken. If you buy a lifetime license, you immediately become a burden on the business that sells you the license. You are not a customer. You are only an expense. This business model only works if the majority of their customers quickly abandon their product. Many developers realize this only after they sell "lifetime" licenses and they end up abandoning their “lifetime” products. Developers who sell lifetime subscriptions just can not afford to produce high-quality, long-lasting software. Reason #3. We're now trying to do the same for photo galleries. So I'm not going to claim that the latest release of MetaSlider Gallery has many new features. What is does have is lot of polish. We're aiming to make things easier and smoother. You should be able to upload images and have a gallery ready in less than one minute! MetaSlider Gallery 2. 33. 0 is available today. This version gives you more control over how galleries look, how images are uploaded, and how the expanded gallery window behaves. Easier image uploads and imports You can now add gallery images from more sources, which should be especially helpful when building larger galleries or migrating image collections into WordPress. Upload: Add new image files directly when building a gallery. Media Library: Choose images that are already available in WordPress. Server folder import: Pull in images that already exist on your server. ZIP import: Bring in a batch of images from a ZIP file. More control over each gallery This release adds several customization options that can be managed per gallery, helping you adapt each gallery to its page instead of relying only on site-wide defaults. Caption appearance: When editing a gallery you can adjust the caption text, colors, and backgrounds so the captions are easier to read in thumbnails and the gallery window. Here's how the captions can appear in the extended gallery window: Gallery window controls: You can now... Metaslider Gallery Pro 1. 2. 0 gives site owners more control over how each gallery looks and behaves. This update adds per-gallery Pro settings, lets you choose which social networks appear in sharing tools, and adds a color picker for the autoplay progress bar, so galleries can better match the needs and branding of each page. Feature highlights Version 1. 2. 0 focuses on practical controls that make galleries easier to tailor for different pages, campaigns, and audiences. Autoplay progress bar color: Pick a custom color for the autoplay progress bar instead of using the default red. Share network selection: Choose which social networks appear in the Share plugin, so visitors only see the options you want to offer. Per-gallery Pro settings: You can now adjust Pro settings on individual MetaSlider slideshows, making it easier to give one gallery thumbnail navigation while leaving another simpler. Settings and interface refinements The settings layout has been reorganized to make the difference between Free and Pro options clearer. Some navigation-related controls now sit in a more focused Navigation area, and Pro feature tooltips have been updated with sharper descriptions. Other improvements and fixes This release also includes several behind-the-scenes improvements focused on security, packaging, translations, and performance. Admin notice hardening: Notice URLs are now escaped and notice messages are sanitized before output. Safer settings saves: Gallery Pro settings now perform their own nonce verification when saved. Cleaner release package: Development Composer packages have been removed from the distributed plugin package. Readme cleanup: The... Metaslider Slideshow Pro 2. 58. 0 makes it easier to build and manage advanced slideshows, led by a new option to duplicate layer slides. If you often create multiple slides with similar layouts, styles, or content blocks, this update should save time by letting you start from an existing layer slide instead of rebuilding from scratch. Plus, MetaSlider Slideshow Pro now supports the most popular 35 languages amongst WordPress users. Feature highlights Duplicate layer slides: You can now create a copy of an existing layer slide so you can reuse a layout and adjust only the content you need. Look for the "Duplicate Layer" icon you see in the screenshot below. Clearer Theme Editor sizing: A new tooltip information helps explain how em and rem units behave when editing slideshow themes. Broader translation coverage: MetaSlider Slideshow Pro now supports many 35 languages including these: Arabic, Bulgarian, Catalan, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Estonian, Filipino, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, Vietnamese, Yoruba. Here's a screenshot of MetaSlider Slideshow Pro in Japanese: Security and reliability updates This release also includes several important hardening changes for safer slideshow editing and rendering. Site owners should update promptly, especially if multiple users can create or edit slideshows. Safer layer slides: Layer slide HTML is now sanitized with HTML Purifier before being rendered on the front end. Safer slide links: Slide URLs are sanitized and escaped more consistently... MetaSlider Slideshow 3. 110. 0 focuses on making large slideshow libraries easier to manage. The headline addition is a new left sidebar in the slideshow editor, so you can drag slides between distant positions without the repetitive scrolling that big slideshows often require. Feature highlights If you maintain slideshows with lots of slides, this release should make day-to-day editing feel faster and more organized. Drag-and-drop slide sidebar: Use the new left sidebar while editing a slideshow to jump around and reorder slides more easily. More complete theme demos: Demo coverage has been expanded so each theme has an example, including previously missing themes. There are new demos available for the Architekt, Databold and Undertone themes. Theme filters in admin: Filter themes on the Slideshows screen to find relevant designs faster. Broader translation coverage: MetaSlider now supports many 35 languages including these: Arabic, Bulgarian, Catalan, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Estonian, Filipino, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, Vietnamese, Yoruba. Clearer interface naming: The admin area now favors “Slideshows” and “Gallery” labels instead of older “Home” and “Lightbox” wording. Other improvements and fixes Version 3. 110. 0 also includes fixes and hardening changes that improve accuracy, safer output, and general admin polish. More accurate slide counts: The edit screen now reports the number of slides correctly for large slideshows. Safer imports: Slideshow imports now check for invalid file types and block unsafe URL targets.... Hey, and thanks for using the MetaSlider plugins. Our goal here at MetaSlider has always been to build the most user-friendly image plugins in WordPress. This month’s release of MetaSlider Slideshow is a huge step towards that goal. This month's release is MetaSlider Slideshow 3. 110. You'll find the plugin is translated into 35 languages. There's also a new drag-and-drop sidebar to reorder your slides. Over 35 new and updated translations If English isn't your native language, both the MetaSlider Slideshow and MetaSlider Gallery plugins will now be much easier to use. We've translated the plugins into 35 of the most popular languages among WordPress users. In the screenshots below you'll see MetaSlider Slideshow in Thai, Hebrew, Japanese, and Swedish. Here's the full list of new or updated translations in this update: Arabic, Bulgarian, Catalan, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Estonian, Filipino, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, Vietnamese, Yoruba. Drag-and-drop sidebar We regularly talk with MetaSlider users who have hundreds of slides in a single slideshow. Their most common request has been a better way to re-order all these slides. So in this version, you'll find a new left sidebar. This really saves time for users with large slideshows. You can use this to quickly drag your slides into a new position, even if you want to move them from position #300 to position #1. More complete theme demos We've added more... Metaslider Gallery 2. 32. 2 adds a new option for sites that want gallery images to appear directly on the page without opening in a separate gallery window. This is a small maintenance release, but the new setting gives site owners more control over how galleries are presented to visitors. Feature highlight Disable the gallery window: You can now turn off the gallery window so images display flat on the page instead of being grouped behind a separate gallery interface. This is useful for portfolio pages, product showcases, documentation, or any layout where you want visitors to see the images immediately as part of the page content. Other changes Image size setting fixed: Gallery images now follow the selected image size setting more consistently. Lightbox conflict fixed: A problem where the “MetaSlider Gallery” category could block the lightbox has been resolved. Author menu visibility fixed: Users with the Author role should no longer see the Gallery menu link when they should not have access. We're delighted to introduce our newest plugin: MetaSlider Gallery. Our goal here at MetaSlider has always been to build the most user-friendly slideshow plugin in WordPress. We’re now bringing that same focus on simplicity, performance, and design to a dedicated gallery plugin. Our MetaSlider Gallery plugin allows you to create stylish image galleries in WordPress. Let's dive in and see what you can do with MetaSlider Gallery. (more... ) Accessibility is an important topic for WordPress developers. We want our websites and plugins to be helpful to as many people as possible. If we build accessible websites, that means that people with disabilities can use them. People with disabilities interact with websites in various ways. Some use screen readers that convert text into spoken words. Others rely on keyboard shortcuts for navigation instead of a mouse. There are also specialized devices like braille displays for those who are blind or have low vision. There's no single solution to make a website accessible for everyone. But developers can try to cover as many use-cases as possible. (more... ) Metaslider Gallery 2. 32. 1 gives site owners more control over gallery thumbnail styling, with new options for thumbnail border and hover colors. It also includes several security-focused fixes around captions, permissions, and license-key exposure, so this is a worthwhile update even if you do not plan to change your gallery design. Feature highlights The main user-facing addition is the ability to customize thumbnail border colors and hover colors, making it easier to match lightbox galleries to your site’s visual style. Thumbnail border color: Set a custom border color so gallery thumbnails fit your theme, brand palette, or page design. Thumbnail hover color: Choose the color visitors see when they hover over thumbnails, giving galleries a more polished interactive feel. After updating, check the thumbnail styling options for your galleries and adjust the new color controls as needed. Other changes This release also hardens several areas of the plugin that handle front-end output and gallery management permissions. Caption sanitization — Image captions are sanitized before being rendered into lightGallery caption data, reducing the risk of cross-site scripting. Gallery duplication permissions — Duplicating galleries now requires the same admin-level permission used by the wider gallery management workflow. REST preview permissions — The gallery preview REST endpoint now follows the plugin’s gallery management permission policy more closely. Because these fixes include security-related changes, administrators should update promptly and confirm that only trusted admin-level users can manage and duplicate galleries. Metaslider Gallery 2. 32. 0 gives site owners a new way to match galleries to their design: you can now choose the autoplay progress bar color instead of using the default red. This release also makes the settings area clearer, updates wording from “lightbox” to “gallery” in key places, and fixes several display issues around captions and Pro options. Feature highlights The headline addition is a new progress bar color setting for galleries using Autoplay. If your gallery advances automatically, you can now choose a progress indicator color that better fits your theme, brand palette, or page design. Custom progress bar color — When Autoplay is enabled, you can now replace the default red progress bar with a color that fits your site. Gallery-focused wording — Settings and UI copy have been updated from “lightbox” to “gallery” for clearer navigation. Rotate and Flip label — The former “Rotate” option now says “Rotate and Flip” so it matches the tools available. Better Free and Pro organization — Settings are more clearly grouped, with refreshed Pro tooltips that explain what each feature does. Other changes and fixes Version 2. 32. 0 also includes practical fixes that should make gallery behavior more consistent, especially for sites using captions, Pro feature toggles, or content filtering options. Caption display fixed — Captions now appear correctly in MetaSlider slideshows when the “Open in Gallery” button is enabled. Pro feature toggles fixed — Pro features can now be disabled from settings as expected. Content filtering corrected —... Metaslider Gallery 2. 30. 0 is a feature-packed update focused on making galleries easier to add, customize, and manage. The headline addition is a new Gutenberg block, so you can insert galleries directly in the WordPress block editor without needing to copy and paste a shortcode first. Feature highlights Gutenberg block: Add galleries directly inside the WordPress block editor using a dedicated block. Showcase layout: Present image collections in a more polished, editorial-style gallery view. Image size controls: Choose which image size is displayed in the gallery window to balance visual quality and performance. Per-slideshow gallery settings: Customize gallery window behavior for individual slideshows instead of relying only on global settings. Usage column: See which posts and pages use each gallery from the gallery list. Click-to-copy shortcodes: Copy a gallery shortcode from the list or editor screen with a single click. Duplicate action — Clone an existing gallery from the editor toolbar when you want to reuse a setup. Admin toolbar edit link — Jump from the front end to the gallery editor while logged in. The new Showcase layout is one of the most visible changes in this release. It gives site owners another presentation option for photo essays, portfolios, news galleries, and other image-heavy content where the gallery itself should feel more prominent. Metaslider Gallery 2. 30. 0 also gives you more control over what visitors see when they open images in the gallery window. You can now choose the displayed image size, which is useful if you... MetaSlider Slideshow 3. 109. 0 makes it easier to review and choose slideshow designs before publishing them. The main user-facing improvements are a new desktop preview view and better filtering for quickstart demos that include hero images, alongside import fixes, refreshed branding, and updated translations. Feature highlights The preview experience now includes a dedicated desktop view, bringing it in line with the responsive preview options used elsewhere in the plugin. This helps you check how a slideshow will look on larger screens before adding it to a live page. Quickstart demos are also easier to browse if you are looking for hero-style slideshow layouts. The update adds filtering and labels for demos that use hero images, so site owners can find full-width, attention-grabbing designs more quickly. Desktop preview: Check slideshow layouts in a desktop-sized view before publishing. Hero image demo labels: Find quickstart demos designed around large hero images more easily. Other changes and fixes This release also includes several polish and maintenance updates that improve the plugin experience across setup, branding, and localization. Quickstart import fix: An import error affecting quickstarts has been fixed, with more graceful handling for failed media imports. Dependency update: Axios has been updated to version 1. 15. 2. Translation updates: Italian, Spanish, and French translations have been refreshed. Updated plugin icons: The plugin icons have been changed to better distinguish slideshow, gallery, and related MetaSlider tools. New plugin name: The plugin is now referred to as “MetaSlider Slideshow” in relevant places. Gallery reference update:... Here at MetaSlider we're often asked about animation in slideshows. A slideshow is often the most prominent feature on a website. It's the "hero" of the site's homepage. So people want to make sure the slideshow is noticeable and adds a "wow" factor. However, we normally recommend focusing on style over flashy animation. Here's a guide to using animation on your WordPress slideshow, and what the animation options are in MetaSlider. This release also makes the lightbox experience more flexible, giving you more control over when it appears and how visitors are invited to open it. Feature highlights Galleries as their own content — Create and manage galleries separately, choose images for each one, and embed them with a shortcode or block. Per-slide lightbox control — Enable or disable the lightbox for individual slides instead of relying on one setting for every image. Custom lightbox prompts — Replace “Open in Lightbox” with an icon, customize the text, or use the updated defaults for a cleaner presentation. Other changes Version 2. 23. 0 also includes several interface refinements, clearer setting labels, translation updates, and bug fixes that should make galleries easier to configure and manage. Featured image lightboxes — The featured image option now works correctly instead of turning the rest of the image into a direct image link. Feature highlights The headline addition is responsive previewing. Slide counter: This shows the total number of slides and the current slide number. Thumbnail strip: This shows preview images that allow visitors to navigate the gallery. Captions: This adds a text caption to your images. Pager: This will show a dot navigation area below each image. To create a new gallery, find the "Galleries" screen as shown in the screenshot below: There are five layouts available for your image gallery: Grid, Masonry, Justified, Carousel, and Showcase. You can select a layout from the right sidebar. The "Grid" layout option will show your images in rows and columns. Each row and column will be the same size. The "Masonry" layout option will also show the images in a grid-like layout, but this approach has a flexible placement that fills gaps left by shorter items. The "Justified" layout option arranges images in rows. This layout allows each image to keep its original aspect ratio, so it won't always be possible to fill each row edge-to-edge. The "Carousel" shows one main image at the time. The visitor can use arrows or the thumbnail navigation to browse to the next image. The "Showcase" layout also shows one image at a time. In this layout, the arrows and the thumbnail navigation are both underneath the image. SiteOrigin is a very popular page-builder plugin in WordPress and MetaSlider is the most popular slideshow plugin. So naturally, they make a great combination. In this guide, I’ll show you how to add a MetaSlider slideshow into a SiteOrigin layout. To get started, ensure you have the "Page Builder by SiteOrigin" plugin installed on your site. In this image below, I have a post called “MetaSlider and SiteOrigin”. Click on the "Add Widget" button above the content area. In the top-left corner find the "Search Widgets" box. Search for "MetaSlider" and click on that result. You can now add a title and choose your slideshow in the "Select Slider" dropdown. Click the blue "Done" button to finish. You will now see your slideshow inside the SiteOrigin layout. You can publish this post and your slideshow will appear on the front of your website. MetaSlider offers several different ways for visitors to see or control the progress of slides in the slideshow. One of those options is to show a progress bar. The progress bar shows the visitor how much time is left before the slideshow moves to the next slide. This slideshow below has an example of the progress bar feature: The "Progress Bar" feature can be enabled while editing a slideshow. The "Slide Delay" option controls how long the progress bar will run. We are happy to provide invoices and receipts for all transactions. However, we often get requests from MetaSlider users who want us to fill in extra paperwork. This is paperwork that is required by their organization and includes vendor registration information, security assessments, and more. This can also include custom invoices and payment methods. As a small team, this paperwork can be very time-consuming. We can complete this extra paperwork, although we will require you to purchase the “Unlimited” option for MetaSlider. We do have some default company information available: Address: MetaSlider LLC, 6635 Pirate Perch Trail, Lakewood Ranch, 34202. Tax Number: Our company is registered in Florida. There is a "CSS Classes" feature in MetaSlider that allows you to add a custom class to your slideshow's main div. This is where the id metaslider-id- is outputted, as in this screenshot: Edit your slideshow and go to Developer Options > CSS Classes. Type your custom class into this field. If you add more than one class, separate each one with an empty space. Save the slideshow changes and check your site's frontend. You will find that the new class is outputted in the code. Now you can add custom CSS using the custom class in your CSS selectors. This code will display the text from the title attribute above your image slides. Place this code in the functions. php file of your theme, or in a custom plugin. Autoptimize is a plugin that makes optimizing your site easy. It can aggregate, minify and cache scripts and styles. You can also optimize and lazy-load images This guide has tips for troubleshooting issues if you are using MetaSlider with the Autoptimize plugin. These tips are not guaranteed to work, but will help with many common issues. If you are using the Autoptimize plugin on your site and the slideshow is not updating, check the “Page Cache” settings. Try disabling the cache or skipping any pages with a slideshow. You should type “Shortcode” into the “Elements” box in the left sidebar. We are looking for the “Shortcode” element. Once you’ve chosen the “Shortcode” element, you can enter your MetaSlider shortcode into the attached box. In the main part of the screen, you’ll see a preview of your slideshow. This may not be a perfect rendering of your slideshow because not all MetaSlider CSS will load inside the Bricks admin area. However, when you click “Publish” on this screen, your slideshow will appear correctly on the front of your site. There is an option to add a Play / Pause button to your MetaSlider slideshows. You can see an example of this button in the screenshot below. The Play / Pause button in the bottom-left corner of the slideshow. In general, we recommend being careful with enabling Auto Play for your slideshows as it may annoy or confuse some users. If you do want slides to move automatically, it’s a good idea to provide people with a Play / Pause button so they can stop them using this feature. Enabling this also helps you to create accessible slideshows. You’ll find this feature in the “Advanced Options” area when you’re editing a slideshow. This feature is available to all MetaSlider themes. You can add extra text to theses buttons. In the screenshot below, you can see extra text added to the "Play Text and "Pause Text" areas. That extra text will appear on the front of the site. In the screenshot below, you can see the "Play video" button with that text. It is possible to customize the appearance of the Play / Pause button. In MetaSlider Pro, use the Theme Editor feature. Go to the "Play / Pause Button" tab and you can customize the design and position of this button. Smush is a leading image optimization plugin. It can optimize, resize, and compress images, as well as convert images to WebP format for faster loading web pages. One issue we've seen reported between MetaSlider and the Smush plugin is with the "Lazy Load" feature. Smush describes it this ways: "This feature stops offscreen images from loading until a visitor scrolls to them. " The impact on MetaSlider is that it can cause images to appear briefly out of place before snapping into the correct place. If you see this happening on your site, try changing the settings in Smush's Lazy Load feature so skip the MetaSlider images. TikTok Slides are included in MetaSlider Pro. A TikTok Slide will display a video in your slideshow directly from TikTok. com. Add a new TikTok Slide to your slideshow Click the “Add Slide” button to launch the Media Manager. Select “TikTok” from the left. Paste any TikTok URL into the text input. Click the "Add to slideshow" button. You will now see a new slider with a preview of your TikTok video. If you don't see a preview, you may need to turn off any features in your browser that block ads or social networks. Choose a good height and width for your videos. TikTok videos use a 16:9 aspect ratio. Click here for more details on recommended sizes. So in the right sidebar, choose an appropriate height and width. 325px wide and 540px high is a common choice. TikTok slides will work with any theme, but we do provide a theme called "Social Play" that is specifically optimized for vertical, social videos. Unsplash is one of the most popular stock photo sites in the world. The site has an ethos of sharing that is similar to the WordPress community. Photographers from all over the world upload their photos and allow you to re-use those photos on your projects. When you use MetaSlider to create sliders, you can access Unsplash to search for and add images. You don't have to worry about paying for Unsplash images or navigating copyright requirements. With Unsplash images, you are allowed to “copy, modify, distribute and use the photos for free, including commercial purposes, without asking permission from or providing attribution to the photographer or Unsplash”. Click here to view the full license. It is good behavior to give credit to the photographer and link to their work, but this isn't required. To start using Unsplash images, edit a slideshow in MetaSlider. Click the "Add Slide" button" in the top-right corner. Click the "Unsplash Library" tab. You will now be able to search for any image in Unsplash. MetaSlider will automatically insert an image that gives credit to the original photographer's work. You can remove this if you don't want it on your site. Click the blue "Add to slideshow" button. MetaSlider will now display a progress bar as the plugin imports the image to your site’s Media Library. If you have problems inserting the images, it could be because the full images are very large. I would recommend changing the “Quality” setting to “Regular” if you want... MetaSlider has full support for the WPBakery plugin. WPBakery is a popular page builder plugin with advanced design features, easy-to-use interface, and a drag-and-drop editor. You can add MetaSlider slideshows to WPBakery layouts using the "Shortcode Mapper" feature in WPBakery. Get the shortcode for your slideshow. The shortcode for each slideshow is available in the right sidebar when you’re in the “Home” area of MetaSlider. In this image below, you can see that the shortcode has an ID of 17. Go to WPBakery > Shortcode Mapper. Click the “Map Shortcode” button. Enter your MetaSlider shortcode. Click the "Parse Shortcode" button. Give a name to this element. In the screenshot below, I've chosen "metaslider". Click the "Save" Changes" at the bottom of the screen. When you're editing a post or page with the Visual Composer, click the + icon. Click the "My shortcodes" tab and your MetaSlider entry will be available for you to insert. There will be a pop-up screen where you can confirm the ID of your MetaSlider slideshow. There will be a live preview of the slideshow inside the WPBakery screen. This may not always be an accurate preview because the CSS for your site may be slightly different between the preview and the frontend of your site. Some MetaSlider users have asked whether it's possible to collect statistics on how many users interact with their slideshows. It is possible to collect data on how many people click on your slideshows. You can use tracking codes from Google Analytics and other analytics platforms. It's not currently possible to collect data on how many people see individual slides. To collect statistics on how many people click on your slides, you can adding a tracking code to the "Link" tab. In the example below, we've added a Google UTM tracking code to this single slide. This "Link" feature is also available for Local Video and External Video slides. Some types of slide have a recommended height and width. This is normally because of the default settings on the original platform. In this guide, we'll explain some of the recommended sizes for YouTube and TikTok slides. The following slide types do not have specific height and width recommendations: Image Slides (we do offer some image size guidelines) External Image Slides Post Feed Slides Layer Slides Local Video Slides External Video Slides Vimeo Slides (Vimeo does have some official suggestions) Understanding Height and Width In this guide, we'll refer to height and width settings in pixels. The height is always first so "1280 x 720" translates to 1280 pixels wide and 720 pixel high. Click here for more on aspect ratios. The height and width settings are in the "Main Options" area of MetaSlider, as in this screenshot: YouTube Slides YouTube uses a 16:9 aspect ratio for regular videos. If you're optimizing for mobile users, choose a smaller size than if you're showing videos on a large screen display. 426 x 240: This the lowest accepted quality for YouTube uploads and works best for very slow internet connections. 640 x 360: This is basic resolution for videos on smartphones, and for videos embedded on websites. 854 x 480: This is know and Standard definition and is the normal playback resolution for YouTube videos on mobile. 1280 x 720:... The MetaSlider team works hard to make sure the plugin is accessible for people using screen readers and/or people with disabilities. If you see any way that we can improve our support for accessible users, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us. Core Accessibility Features The main MetaSlider plugin provides accessibility features that do not require you to configure any settings. One key feature is our use of ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) which defines define ways to make the web more accessible. MetaSlider uses aria-roledescription and aria-label. Screen readers can use this to identify why an element is on the website and what it does. Mozilla has good introductions to aria-roledescription and aria-label. This screenshot below shows an example of that code in the MetaSlider output for a slideshow. Next, here's a second example using a single slide. MetaSlider again uses aria-roledescription and aria-label. In this example, we also use aria-hidden to indicate that this slide is off-screen and not currently in use. Accessibility Options In addition to our core accessibility features, MetaSlider also provides some options in the "Accessibility Options" area of the slideshow editing screen: Keyboard Controls: Use the forward and back arrows on your keyboard to navigate through the slides. Tabindex for navigation: This helps to hide inactive slides from screenreaders. ARIA Live: Screenreaders will announce when the slides change. ARIA Current: This helps screenreaders to understand which slide is currently active. Keep scrolling down for more detailed guides to each of these... In previous versions of MetaSlider, there are several slideshow libraries available. These included FlexSlider, Responsive Slides, Nivo Slider, and Coin Slider. In MetaSlider 3. 60 (released in 2023) we disabled three of those options by default. We now focus all our development efforts on Flexslider. When you first install MetaSlider, you will no longer see the option to choose Responsive Slides, Nivo Slider, and Coin Slider. Those libraries are now marked as “Legacy”. There are some things to note here: We are not planning to remove those legacy libraries, but new features will be Flexslider-only. Existing users will still see the four library options. You can change this using the “Disable Legacy Libraries” setting. If you are having problems with any of the Legacy libraries, we recommend changing to Flexslider. The Post Feed Slides feature in MetaSlider allows you to pull content into the slideshow from the taxonomy on the screen. For example, if you are viewing an archive page for the "Apple" category, the URL will be /category/apple/. It is possible to place a MetaSlider slideshow on this screen and automatically show the content from this category. On a Post Feed slide, click the "Post Types" tab. For "Source posts", select this option: "Automatically choose post from the current frontend taxonomy". You can use any coding technique or page-builder to place a slideshow on archive pages. In this example, we'll use the Site Editor feature in the WordPress core. In this screenshot below, we've placed a MetaSlider shortcode into the Archive template. This approach will show a MetaSlider slideshow on top of every archive page. This screenshot below shows a slideshow on a Category archive page. This guide will show you how to create custom MetaSlider slideshow designs using code. This will help you if you're a theme developer and want to provide a custom MetaSlider theme. This will also help designers who want to customize a slideshow design for their clients. We do also offer a no-code approach to creating custom theme via the Theme Editor. Please note that themes created through the method in this tutorial will not be available in the Theme Editor. A Boilerplate MetaSlider Theme We provide a boilerplate example of a custom MetaSlider theme. You can download this zip and decompress it to use as an example: Click to download the boilerplate. How to Customize an Existing Theme To customize one of the existing themes provided with MetaSlider. Copy the folder of the theme from /wp-content/plugins/ml-slider/themes/. For example, we are going to take the "cubic"folder. Create a folder called "ms-themes" inside your WordPress theme. Paste the folder for your theme copy inside "ms-themes". There are two things you will need to modify after moving the theme: MetaSlider does require that your theme has a unique name. So to modify a custom theme, you will need to replace the words 'cubic' and 'Cubic' words (case sensitive) with a custom name by checking the code from the duplicated files. You will need declare the custom theme through a manifest. php file inside /ms-themes/. This details for this file are available in the boilerplate above, and the text guide below. How to Build... You can see that button in the screenshot below: Once you click this button, you'll see a modal pop-up with an option to choose the slideshow you want. You can see that modal in this next screenshot. After you choose your slideshow, MetaSlider will insert the correct shortcode for this slideshow, as in the screenshot below. Touch Swipe is one of several different ways that users can touch and interact with their screens. It can be a useful feature for your MetaSlider slideshows. Your users can swipe their fingers across photos on your site and see them respond. On mobile devices, this gesture can help you perform actions like scrolling, navigating between pages or sections, or interacting elements on the screen. In the case of MetaSlider, it helps you move one image off the screen and see the next image. One way to see how Touch Swipe works is to see it in action. If you're reading this on a mobile phone or another touch-enabled device, we have two examples below for you. One example works with touch swipe and one does not. If you use the normal "Gallery" block in WordPress, it will show your images but you will not be able to use your finger to navigate between the images. However, if you view a MetaSlider slideshow, you will be able to manually move from one image to the next. Place your finger on any image in the slideshow below, and you'll be able to slide that image off the screen. You can enable this feature for your slideshows using the "Touch Swipe" option: MetaSlider has a "Device" tab that allows you to show different slides to different screen sizes. MetaSlider users rely on this feature so that they can customize their slideshows for different devices. For example, on a mobile phone you can show a styling fast-loading image with no caption. But on a large desktop screen you can show a large, high-resolution image with a caption. Device Options for Slides In the MetaSlider slideshow editing area, you'll see a "Device" tab. Here you can choose to hide your slides on some device sizes. We provide four breakpoints by default: smartphone tablet laptop desktop Each icon has a tooltip with details of what this option does. For example, if you click the tablet icon, you'll see the message, "When enabled this setting will hide the slide on screen widths of 768px to 1023px". Configure the Breakpoints If you want to configure these settings, go to the "Settings & Help" area. You will see the option to choose the breakpoints for the different device sizes. Device Options for Slideshows In the MetaSlider slideshow editing area, you’ll now see a “Device Options” tab. Here you can choose to hide your slideshow's arrows and navigation on some device sizes. You can also choose to hide the entire slideshow on some device sizes. MetaSlider has four options for controlling the transition effect between slides. You can choose between "Fade", "Slide", "Zooming" and "Flip" options. In this slideshow below, you can see the "Fade" effect" in action. We have used the "Transition Speed" setting in MetaSlider to slow down the effect so you can clearly see how the "Fade" option works. In this next slideshow below, you can view the "Slide" effect" in action. We have used the "Animation speed" setting in MetaSlider to slow down the transition so you can clearly see how the "Slide" effect works. In this next slideshow below, you can view the "Zooming" effect" in action. We have used the "Animation speed" setting in MetaSlider to slow down the transition so you can clearly see how the "Zooming" effect works. In this next slideshow below, you can view the "Flip" effect" in action. We have used the "Animation speed" setting in MetaSlider to slow down the transition so you can clearly see how the "Flip" effect works. One of the animation options available in MetaSlider is called "Image Animation". This allows you to add dynamic elements to the transition between slides in your slideshow. Instead of simply moving from one slide to another, you can use "Image Animation" to add a dynamic effect when one slide leaves the screen and a new slide arrives. Here's how to set up the "Image Animation" option: Go to "MetaSlider" in your WordPress admin area and edit a slideshow. Choose "Slide" as the effect in the "Transition Options" area. Under the "Image Animation" option, you can see over 30 different settings. I'd recommend testing a few of these effects to see which works best with your slideshow. These effects will work for slides that load both vertically and horizontally. The best place to preview all of these options is on the website of the developer who built the original version of this feature called "Easing". Click here to visit the demo website. You can choose the options from the dropdowns and then click the big blue "The Clicker" button. Here's a live example using the "Ease In Elastic" option. I've set the "Animation speed" to be very slow so you have plenty of time to see the transition in action. MetaSlider users often want a carousel slideshow. In a carousel, there are multiple images visible in the display at the same time. This is possible with MetaSlider, and in this guide we'll show you how it's done. This image shows a typical carousel slideshow with both images and text captions. Go to "Quick Start" in your WordPress admin area. Choose "Carousel" from the dropdown menu shown below. In this example, we're going to choose "Image Carousel with Captions". Click that option and then click "Yes, please". If you publish this slideshow immediately it will look like the "Image Carousel with Captions" demo. You can use the MetaSlider interface to update both the image and the text caption. Look in the right sidebar and choose the width of your slideshow. In this example, I've set both the width and the height to be 400px so my image displays will be square. If you do want multiple images to show at the same time, make sure the "Width" is narrower than your container, which is the space on the website where you want to place this carousel. In the "Carousel mode" area, you will set of options for your carousel: Click the "Preview" button in the toolbar at the top of the screen. You will now see your carousel in action. You can control which area of the image is shown using the settings shown in the next step of this tutorial. Standard: This will automatically crop all your images to the "Width" dimension set inside your slideshow. The "Height" dimension will be adjusted proportionally based on the "Width". Disabled: This will disable all image cropping options. You can use the "Smooth Height" option to make sure the navigation arrows are always visible, no matter the image size.
